1 Corinthians 15:29-34

29 For otherwise, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why then are they baptized for them?

30 Why are we also in danger every hour?

31 I affirm, brothers and sisters, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, that I die daily.

32 If from human motives I fought with wild beasts at Ephesus, what good is it to me? If the dead are not raised, let’s eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.

33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.”

34 Sober up morally and stop sinning, for some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.

The Effects of Denying the Resurrection

Baptism for the dead

Next, Paul discusses the harmful effects that denying the resurrection would have on the lives of believers. In verse 29 he writes: “For otherwise, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why then are they baptized for them?” This is a very difficult verse to interpret. There are various views regarding the meaning of “baptism for the dead.” At first glance, it seems to refer to a kind of proxy baptism on behalf of close relatives who died without being baptized. However, it is unlikely that Paul approved of such a practice. The following is the author’s own interpretation of this passage. (1) The practice of being “baptized for the dead” must have been well known to the believers in Corinth. (2) It was likely a custom practiced by pagans. Although they did not possess a correct understanding of the gospel, they nevertheless believed in life after death and underwent baptism on behalf of the dead. (3) Paul was not endorsing this practice. Rather, he drew attention to the fact that these people practiced it because they believed in life after death, and he used that point to strengthen his own argument. In any case, we must never establish a doctrine on the basis of such a difficult passage. This is a fundamental principle of biblical interpretation.

A life without the hope of after death

If the resurrection of the dead is denied, then the possibility of life after death must also be denied. (1) If there is no resurrection, then every life of wholehearted devotion becomes meaningless. Paul says, “I die daily.” (2) Those who have no hope beyond death will choose a life devoted to pleasure. (3) However, because there is life after death, we must be careful not to be drawn into a pleasure-seeking way of life. Christians should strive to live righteously, fully aware that they will one day stand before God. (4) Finally, Paul exposes the ignorance of the Corinthian Christians, who prided themselves on their knowledge, in order to bring them to a sense of shame. How do you think your life would change if you were fully convinced of life after death? In what specific areas would you live differently?

Today's prayer

Heavenly Father, the hope of life after death gives me strength to live today. May I walk today with hope. Lead me in the everlasting way. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
