1 Then I raised my eyes again and looked, and behold, there was a flying scroll.
2 And he said to me, “What do you see?” And I said, “I see a flying scroll; its length is twenty cubits, and its width ten cubits.”
3 Then he said to me, “This is the curse that is going forth over the face of the entire land; everyone who steals certainly will be purged away according to the writing on one side, and everyone who swears falsely will be purged away according to the writing on the other side.
4 I will make it go forth,” declares the Lord of armies, “and it will enter the house of the thief and the house of the one who swears falsely by My name; and it will spend the night within that house and destroy it with its timber and stones.”
The sixth vision is the flying scroll. What this vision teaches is that “those who break the Law will be judged by the Law.”
Prophetically, a “scroll” refers to a message or oracle from God. The flying scroll was open so that anyone could read it. Its length was twenty cubits (29 ft), and its width was ten cubits (14.5 ft), so it was extremely large. “Then he said to me, ‘This is the curse that is going forth over the face of the entire land; everyone who steals certainly will be purged away according to the writing on one side, and everyone who swears falsely will be purged away according to the writing on the other side’” (v 3). (1) “Everyone who steals” is a violator of the eighth commandment of the Ten Commandments. “Everyone who swears falsely” is a violator of the third commandment of the Ten Commandments. (2) They will be judged by the Law that they have violated. (3) The flying scroll represents the “curse” that judges the violators. It goes out over the face of the whole land and removes the violators. “‘I will make it go forth,’ declares the Lord of armies, ‘and it will enter the house of the thief and the house of the one who swears falsely by My name; and it will spend the night within that house and destroy it with its timber and stones’” (v 4). (1) It is the Lord of armies who sends out that “curse.” (2) That “curse” enters the house of the thief and the house of the one who swears falsely by My name (the violators of the third commandment).
Paul discusses the relationship between the Law and faith in Galatians 3:10-13. “For all who are of works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written: ‘Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all the things written in the book of the Law, to do them.’ Now, that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, ‘the righteous one will live by faith’” (v10-11). The “curse (judgment)” brought by the Law is God’s method for leading the Jewish people to spiritual restoration. We, who could only receive the “curse” through the Law, have been justified by faith. This principle is the same for both Jews and Gentiles. Since we have been saved by grace through faith, let us carefully watch over our inner lives so that we do not again take upon ourselves the burden of the Law.
Today's prayer
Heavenly Father, I have been saved by grace through faith. Please guard me so that I will not fall into legalism. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
