12 ¶“You also, Ethiopians, will be slain by My sword.”
13 And He will stretch out His hand against the north
And eliminate Assyria,
And He will make Nineveh a desolation,
Parched like the wilderness.
14 Flocks will lie down in her midst,
All animals that range in herds;
Both the pelican and the hedgehog
Will spend their nights in the tops of her pillars;
Birds will sing in the window,
Devastation will be on the threshold;
For He has uncovered the cedar work.
15 This is the presumptuous city
That dwells securely,
Who says in her heart,
“I am, and there is no one besides me.”
How she has become a desolation,
A resting place for animals!
Everyone who passes by her will hiss
And wave his hand in contempt.
In verses 1-4, the day of the Lord’s anger was prophesied against apostate Israel. Following that, judgment against four surrounding nations is prophesied (v 4-15). This time, we will consider (3) the Cushites and (4) Assyria. Cush (Ethiopia) is a nation located to the south of Israel. Concerning this nation, it simply says, “You also, Ethiopians, will be slain by My sword” (v 12). This prophecy was fulfilled in 664 BC. At that time, Ethiopia ruled over Egypt. That is why the southern kingdom is identified as Ethiopia rather than Egypt. In that year, the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal invaded Thebes and destroyed it (ref. Nah. 3:8). When God’s enemies fall, it happens suddenly and decisively.
The final judgment on the neighboring nations to the north, south, east, and west of Israel is against Assyria in the north. “And He will stretch out His hand against the north and eliminate Assyria, And He will make Nineveh a desolation, Parched like the wilderness” (v 13). (1) This prophecy was fulfilled in 612 BC. (2) Nineveh (the capital) will be completely destroyed. Its total destruction is evidenced by what dwells there: “Flocks will lie down in her midst, all animals that range in herds; both the pelican and the hedgehog will spend their nights in the tops of her pillars; birds will sing in the window, devastation will be on the threshold…” (v 14). (3) “This city made of cedar” is an expression describing the pride of Nineveh. (4) Just before its destruction, Nineveh boasted, “I am, and there is no one besides me” (Isa. 47:8). They despised the Lord. Therefore, the Lord’s retributive judgment came upon them. “Hiss and wave his hand” indicate that people will come to despise Assyria. When the Lord’s people are despised, it is the same as the Lord Himself being despised. The Lord protects His people. At the scene of Jesus’ crucifixion, the following description appears: “And those passing by were speaking abusively to Him, shaking their heads” (Matt. 27:39). Those who mock God will in turn be mocked by God and by people. Blessed are those who confess the Lord Jesus before others, for He will acknowledge them before the Father in heaven.
Today's prayer
Father God of Jesus Christ, in every situation I will acknowledge and confess, “Jesus is Lord.” In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
