Acts 5:25-26

25 But someone came and reported to them, “The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple area and teaching the people!”

26 Then the captain went along with the officers and proceeded to bring them back without violence (for they were afraid of the people, that they might be stoned).

The Apostles’ Rearrest

Bold preaching

The members of the Sanhedrin were greatly perplexed when they learned that the apostles had vanished from the prison. Then, someone came to them with the latest news: “The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple area and teaching the people!” (1) This report deepened their perplexity. Although it is unclear how it was possible, those who were imprisoned last night were out and back at the temple, teaching the people again. (2) The apostles’ attitude towards evangelism serves as both a lesson and a challenge for Christians. The apostles were determined to spread the gospel, regardless of the sacrifices required. They were not afraid of being re-arrested.

The apostles taken away

“Then the captain went along with the officers and proceeded to bring them back without violence (for they were afraid of the people, that they might be stoned).” (1) The captain of the temple guard, who holds the second highest authority next to the high priest within the temple, went out with his officers to bring the apostles in. (2) They brought the apostles to the council using peaceful methods, without resorting to violence. (a) They feared the wrath of the people. (b) The apostles were well received by many. (c) There was a risk of a riot if the crowd was angered, which is what it means to say they might be stoned. The apostles generally respected and obeyed public authorities. (1) Earthly authorities are appointed by God. (2) Earthly authorities are entrusted by God with the duty to bring peace and stability. (3) However, if earthly authorities oppose God, the apostles would obey God regardless of the consequences. (4) The early church never considered overthrowing political power; even under persecution, they prayed for the blessing of their leaders. (5) They advanced with one goal of spreading the gospel. Do we have such a passion for mission within us? What we need is to be filled with the Holy Spirit through faith.

Today's prayer
