1 Samuel 2:1-3

1 Then Hannah prayed and said,
“My heart rejoices in the Lord;
My horn is exalted in the Lord,
My mouth speaks boldly against my enemies,
Because I rejoice in Your salvation.

2 “There is no one holy like the Lord,
Indeed, there is no one besides You,
Nor is there any rock like our God.

3 “Do not go on boasting so very proudly,
Do not let arrogance come out of your mouth;
For the Lord is a God of knowledge,
And with Him actions are weighed.

Hannah’s Song (1)

Boast in the Lord (verse 1)

1 Samuel 2:1-10 contains Hannah’s song of praise. We will study this song of praise in two parts. This song tells us how rich Hannah’s spirituality was. (1) She is boasting. She is not boasting about the birth of her son, but the Lord Himself who made it possible. She is exulting more in the One who gave the gift than the gift that was given. This is the characteristic of a true believer. (2) She sings, “My horn is exalted in the Lord.” The “horn” is a symbol of strength. In other words, she is boasting that she has been given strength by the Lord. From where and from what do you get your strength? (3) She is rejoicing in the “salvation” from the Lord. The “salvation” here refers to being freed from infertility.

The One incomparable (verse 2)

Next, Hannah declares that the Lord is incomparable. (1) There is no one as holy as the Lord. (2) There is no god that can compare with the Lord. (3) There is no god as mighty as the Lord. “Rock” means a “strong one.” It says in Psalm 18:2, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my savior, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” Today, let’s remember that the God we believe in is an incomparable one, filled with overwhelming power and glory.

Words of warning (verse 3)

Next, words of warning are spoken. One must not be arrogant or speak haughtily before the Lord. For the Lord is Almighty God, and He knows everything within our hearts. He is the one who judges whether our actions are good or evil. What do you learn from Hannah’s song today?

Today's prayer

Holy God, no matter where I look, there is nothing comparable to You. My soul boasts in You and rejoices that I am connected to You. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
