Mark 16:14

14 Later He appeared to the eleven disciples themselves as they were reclining at the table; and He reprimanded them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who had seen Him after He had risen from the dead.

Jesus Appearing before the Disciples

Unfaithful disciples

The parallel passage of today’s passage is found in Luke 24:36-43. Let’s look into what actually happened referring to that passage. (1) The disciples had heard the news of Jesus’ resurrection from the two unnamed disciples, but they couldn’t immediately believe it. They discussed whether it was true or not. Debating in one’s mind and actually encountering the resurrected Jesus are issues of entirely different dimensions. Is your faith merely a matter of discussion, or is it an experiential faith, knowing Jesus as the living one who answers our prayers? Let’s earnestly seek that our faith is made more and more experiential. (2) The apostles were afraid when they saw Jesus. They thought they were looking at a spirit. This is a natural human reaction when encountering supernatural phenomena. (3) Next, they heard Jesus speak, and it filled them with joy. However, overwhelmed by their joy, they still found it hard to believe. The world will say that this is “too good to be true.” However, the Bible teaches, “Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and which have not entered the human heart, all that God has prepared for those who love Him” (1 Cor. 2:9). Are you the type who won’t believe unless you can understand it with your own mind? If your heart is closed due to unbelief and fear, let’s welcome the resurrected Jesus into your heart. Jesus will fill your heart with the “peace (shalom) of God.”

The proof of resurrection

Seeing the disciples’ unbelief, Jesus said, “See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me, and see.” He then ate broiled fish in front of them, reminiscent of the meal of reconciliation (also the Last Supper) that He shared with the disciples. Through this, Jesus reaffirmed His love and forgiveness to the disciples. How will your life change, if you have the assurance that the resurrection after death is guaranteed? Are you living your life, seeking only the things of eternal value?

Today's prayer

Father God of Jesus Christ, please allow me to become one who believes and receives life, rather than one who does not believe. Please give me faith. I pray in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
