12 Now after that, He appeared in a different form to two of them while they were walking along on their way to the country.
13 And they went away and reported it to the rest, but they did not believe them, either.
In today’s passage, we encounter the story of two disciples walking from Jerusalem to the countryside. The same account is written more in detail in Luke 24:13-32. Let’s look into the details referring to Luke’s account. These disciples were unnamed. They were hurrying down the road to a village called Emmaus. The reason why they were headed to this village is not stated, but it could be that they had lost hope due to Jesus’ death or felt the imminent danger of arrest. Perhaps it was both. (1) Their spiritual eyes were closed, preventing them from recognizing that the person walking with them was Jesus Himself. (2) Their faith had become something of the past. They spoke of their faith in past tense, saying, “We were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel.” (3) Their issue was that they did not understand the meaning of the cross. Is your faith in the past tense? Many people tend to refer to their younger self in their testimony. However, in faith, “now” is most crucial. The Jesus who once lived is still alive today. Let’s pray that our spiritual eyes may be opened, and that we may be sustained daily by the life of Christ.
The moment for the faith of the two disciples to be revived has arrived. When Jesus broke the bread, their spiritual eyes were opened. They must have seen the marks of the nails in His hands. At that moment, the explanations of the Scriptures they had heard from Jesus along the way took on new meaning for them. They said, “Were our hearts not burning within us when He was speaking to us on the road, while He was explaining the Scriptures to us?” They immediately got up, returned to Jerusalem, and reported their encounter with the resurrected Jesus to the other disciples. They went back to where they belonged. They couldn’t help but share the encounter with the living Christ. Is your heart burning with the Word of God? Are your daily devotions becoming a place where you meet the living Christ? Let’s acknowledge Jesus, who walks with you each day.
Today's prayer
Father God of Jesus Christ, please open my spiritual eyes. Please help me continue to walk with the living Lord Christ. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
