Mark 15:22-23

22 Then they *brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull.

23 And they tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it.

Arriving at Golgotha

The location of Golgotha

Jesus and Simon of Cyrene arrived at the execution site. This place was called Golgotha, meaning “skull.” It was not named so because the place resembled the shape of a human skull, but because this was the place of execution. This was a mound designated for public display of executions. The word “Calvary” is the Latin name for the same location. The location of Golgotha was not far from the city walls. It was most likely just outside the walls. Not only crucifixion was a capital punishment, it also was an exemplary punishment. Therefore, the location needed to be easily accessible for anyone to witness, preferably near a public road. Jesus was nailed to the cross in the presence of many enemies and onlookers.

The wine mixed with myrrh

The Roman soldiers, before crucifying Jesus, tried to give Him wine mixed with myrrh. This was a custom of the time, intended to alleviate the pain of being crucified. The wine served as an analgesic. However, Jesus upon tasting it, refused to drink. The reason for this was to maintain His consciousness until the end. While the analgesic could alleviate pain, it also had a sedative effect, causing a clouding of consciousness. For Jesus, enduring the suffering of the cross and engaging in the intense spiritual battle, it was necessary to maintain a clear and conscious mind. Here, is the fulfillment of Psalm 69:21, which says, “They also gave me a bitter herb in my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.” The Lord Jesus, for the sake of our sins, endured suffering until the end, fulfilling the will of our heavenly Father. His suffering was not imposed but voluntary. As we reflect on the love and pain of Jesus, let’s worship the Lord wholeheartedly.
