Mark 15:1

1 Early in the morning the chief priests with the elders, scribes, and the entire Council immediately held a consultation; and they bound Jesus and led Him away, and turned Him over to Pilate.

From Sanhedrin to Pilate

At dawn

Let’s review the developments so far. Jesus, who was arrested in Gethsemane, underwent questioning by Annas the puppeteer in the shadows (he is the father-in-law of Caiaphas the high priest). He then stood before the Sanhedrin for a religious trial at Caiaphas’s residence. Although this unofficial trial took place in the middle of the night, a decision was made on charges of blasphemy, deemed worthy of the death penalty. As dawn broke, another trial was conducted. According to Jewish law, a trial should not be held before the morning sacrifice (before 9 am). Therefore, as formality they arranged the proceedings to appear as if the trial took place after sunrise. The account of this trial is recorded in Luke 22:66-71. The members of the Sanhedrin pressed Jesus, saying, “If you are the Christ, tell us.” They had already passed a sentence of “death for blasphemy.” This question aimed to confirm that judgment. Jesus responded, “You say correctly that I am.” This answer for the Sanhedrin confirmed the charge of blasphemy against Him.

To Pilate’s residence

At that time, the Jews did not have the authority to execute the death penalty. Unless a death sentence was confirmed in a Roman court, they could not put Jesus to death. So now, they handed Jesus over to the Roman governor, Pilate on charges of treason. At this point, Judas’ role came to an end. Judas, between the religious trial and the political trial, took his own life (Matt. 27:3-10). At the end, you must reap what you sow. From the Thursday night when Jesus had the Passover meal (the Last Supper) with his disciples to the Friday morning when he was crucified, a variety of events unfolded at a rapid pace within half a day. This was something the Jewish leaders and even Judas Iscariot did not anticipate. God’s plan was for the Lamb of God to be crucified and die during the Passover. People may stir and strive to fulfill their own desires, but God’s plan alone moves forward, quietly, yet surely. This is good news for those who believe in God. Are you walking with God? Today, let’s continue to walk seeking God’s will.

Today's prayer

Heavenly Father, no matter how much people stir and strive, Your plan alone remains. Please allow me to continue walking in the path of Your will today. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
