Mark 13:28-31

28 “Now learn the parable from the fig tree: as soon as its branch has become tender and sprouts its leaves, you know that summer is near.

29 So you too, when you see these things happening, recognize that He is near, right at the door.

30 Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.

31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

The Parable of the Fig Tree

The fig tree

What does the fig tree represent? Often time, the fig tree is explained to represent Israel. However, in the Bible, while the grapevine is used to symbolize Israel, the fig tree is not given the same significance. In today’s passage, a parable is told using the characteristics of the fig tree. (1) In spring, the fig tree’s branches become tender and produce leaves, indicating that summer is near. (2) Similarly, when the “things” spoken by Jesus occurs, it signifies that His second coming is near. The emphasis here is that it is “near.” (3) “These things” refer to the appearance of the “abomination of desolation” (13:14). If the “abomination of desolation” appears, it means that the Lord’s second coming is near. (4) More precisely, the Lord’s second coming occurs three and a half years after the appearance of the “abomination of desolation.” The coming referred to here is the earthly return, distinct from the rapture where the saints of the church are caught up to heaven. The timing of the rapture is unknown, but the second coming occurs approximately three and a half years after the appearance of the “abomination of desolation.”

The Lord’s words will not pass away

To emphasize the certainty of the end-time prophecies, the following words are spoken: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away” (v 31). Indeed, God’s Word is eternal and trustworthy in any age. Christ spoke these series of prophecies to comfort and encourage the Jews who would go through the Great Tribulation. Satan seeks to erase the Jewish people, but God will protect His chosen people. The reason these end-time prophecies are given is not only for the Jews but also for us, Gentile Christians, to receive comfort and encouragement. The prophecy of Christ’s reign on earth is a great encouragement for those going through trials. Have you been diligent in listening to God’s promises, encouragement, and warnings? Through daily devotion, let’s seek assurance from the Lord and face difficulties with confidence.
