Amos 9:11-12

11  “On that day I will raise up the fallen shelter of David,
And wall up its gaps;
I will also raise up its ruins
And rebuild it as in the days of old;

12  So that they may possess the remnant of Edom
And all the nations who are called by My name,”
Declares the Lord who does this.

The Restoration of Israel (1)

Verse 11

The Book of Amos consists of a total of nine chapters. In the first eight and a half chapters, Amos has condemned Israel’s sin, but in the final five verses he prophesies about Israel’s hope. In other words, the Book of Amos ends with a message of hope. May our lives be like that as well. In verse 11, Amos prophesies the restoration of the house (dynasty) of David (the restoration of the unified kingdom including both the north and the south). (1) “The fallen shelter of David” refers to the state in which the house of David has collapsed and has become like a shabby makeshift hut. That shelter (booth) will be rebuilt into a splendid structure. (2) This is the same content as the prophecy of Isaiah 11:1: “Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, and a Branch from his roots will bear fruit.” The house of David is a great tree that has been cut down. Yet a shoot will spring up from that stump, and a branch will come forth. (3) In Acts 15:16, James, the brother of the Lord Jesus, quotes this passage. The background is the debate over whether Gentiles can be saved by faith alone without becoming like Jews (without receiving circumcision). James’ point is this: “Since the salvation of the Gentiles is a prerequisite for the restoration of the house of David, Gentile believers should not be excluded.”

Verse 12

In verse 12, Amos prophesies Israel’s supremacy over the nations. (1) Even from Edom, which had been Israel’s enemy, believers will arise. (2) And from the nations (Gentiles) as well, many believers will arise. These are Gentile believers who have come through the Great Tribulation. They are the “sheep,” the believers who appear in Matthew 25:31-45. (3) In the Messianic Kingdom (the Millennial Kingdom), Israel will be in a position of superiority over Gentile believers. (4) In Acts 15:17, James quotes this passage. His point is that “since in the Messianic Kingdom the nations (Gentiles) will also be there together with restored Israel, promoting evangelism to the Gentiles is a natural obligation.” The time of Israel’s restoration, prophesied by Amos, is drawing near. No one knows when the rapture will occur or when the Great Tribulation will come. But one thing is certain: the time is near. Let us be alert and faithfully devote ourselves to the Lord’s work.
