44 Now He said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all the things that are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”
45 Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,
46 and He said to them, “So it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
47 and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
48 You are witnesses of these things.
49 And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
The risen Jesus showed His disciples that all the prophecies written about Him in the Old Testament had been fulfilled. The phrase “the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms” refers to the entire Old Testament (the Hebrew Scriptures are divided into these three sections). The disciples were called to proclaim the following message as witnesses of Jesus. (1) The suffering and resurrection of Christ were not accidental events but were foretold in the Old Testament. (2) Through the resurrection of Christ, a new era has begun, an era in which repentance for the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. (3) That forgiveness of sins is obtained “in the name of Jesus.” Let us once again confirm the heart of the gospel. We are saved in the name of Jesus because of what He has done for us. No human effort or work can earn God’s forgiveness. Moreover, God’s forgiveness is given to all who believe. There is no partiality with God. Have you believed and proclaimed this gospel?
Jesus said, “And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” The “promise of the Father” refers to the Holy Spirit. The Acts of the Apostles, which is the continuation of the Gospel of Luke, is so filled with the work of the Holy Spirit that it is sometimes called “The Acts of the Holy Spirit.” Jesus knew that no one could become His witness without the power of the Holy Spirit. That is why He said, “Stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” Are you weary in your ministry? If so, examine whether you have been trying to go out in your own strength, and once again ask to be filled with the Holy Spirit. The same Holy Spirit who transformed the disciples on the Day of Pentecost can transform you even now. Let’s confess your own weakness and earnestly seek the fire of the Holy Spirit.
Today's prayer
Father God of Jesus Christ, I feel weary now. There is no strength within me. Please fill me with the Holy Spirit. I believe that You have heard this prayer. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
