Luke 22:7-13

7  Now the first day of Unleavened Bread came, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.

8  And so Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it.”

9  They said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare it?”

10  And He said to them, “When you have entered the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you; follow him into the house that he enters.

11  And you shall say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’

12  And he will show you a large, furnished upstairs room; prepare it there.”

13  And they left and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.

Preparing the Passover Meal

Peter and John sent

The Last Supper was also the Passover meal. Unlike an ordinary meal, the Passover meal required various preparations. Therefore, Jesus sent Peter and John to make those preparations. The disciples had not been told where the Passover meal would take place, for Jesus already knew of Judas’s impending betrayal. If Jesus had been arrested through Judas’s betrayal before the Passover meal, God’s plan would have been interrupted midway. For that reason, the location of the meal was kept secret even from the disciples. We often use the expression, “Judas betrayed Jesus.” That is certainly true, yet it tells only part of the story. Let us confirm the following points: (1) Judas could not have betrayed Jesus unless “the time of Jesus” had come. (2) God had complete control over every step that led Jesus to the cross. (3) Jesus willingly chose the path that led to the cross. Are you doubting the love of Jesus today? Let us worship the One who has loved you this deeply.

A man carrying a pitcher of water

Peter and John were instructed that when they entered the city, they would see “a man carrying a pitcher of water.” Why was this man to serve as the sign? Because carrying water pitchers was normally women’s work, so a man doing it would stand out clearly. (It is thought that this man may have belonged to the Essene community, whose members often practiced celibacy.) The two disciples followed the man carrying the pitcher of water to the house he entered. There they said to the owner, “The Teacher says to you, ‘Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?’” The owner then showed them a large upper room, already furnished and prepared. Everything happened exactly as Jesus had said. In Luke 19:29-35, we saw how the owners of the colt, though poor, offered their valuable possession for Jesus’ use. In today’s passage, we read of “the man carrying the pitcher of water” and “the owner of the house with the large upper room,” both of whom served Jesus in their own ways. The poor, the unknown, and the wealthy alike each served the Lord according to what they had. With what are you seeking to serve the Lord?

Today's prayer

Father God of Jesus Christ, I have told myself that I cannot yet serve You until certain conditions are met. Now I realize how deceptive that thought has been. Please make me one who carries water for You. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
