2 Samuel 22:1-7

1 Now David spoke the words of this song to the Lord on the day that the Lord had saved him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.

2 He said,
“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;

3 My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge;
My savior, You save me from violence.

4 I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,
And I am saved from my enemies.

5 For the waves of death encompassed me;
The floods of destruction terrified me;

6 The ropes of Sheol surrounded me;
The snares of death confronted me.

7 In my distress I called upon the Lord,
Yes, I called out to my God;
And from His temple He heard my voice,
And my cry for help came into His ears.

David’s Song (1)

The characteristics of this song

We will study the psalm recorded here in several parts. First, let us note some characteristics of this psalm: (1) This psalm is almost identical to Psalm 18. The version written here is likely the original, which was later slightly revised for worship use in Psalm 18. (2) In this psalm, two types of praise are offered to God. First, there is praise that exalts God by listing His attributes. Second, there is praise that glorifies God by recalling His mighty works. (3) Incidentally, this psalm is read aloud in synagogues on the seventh day of Passover each year. That shows how important this psalm is to the Jewish people.

God’s attributes (v 2-4)

David praises God by listing nine of His attributes: (1) Rock, (2) Fortress, (3) Deliverer, (4) God my rock, (5) Shield, (6) Horn of my salvation, (7) Stronghold, (8) Savior, (9) Refuge. Each of these terms is paired with “my” or “of my.” This shows how personally and intimately David experienced and trusted in God. Now, as we recall these attributes of God, let us also take refuge in Him and find deliverance from trouble. Let us praise the name of our God, who protects us with His mighty hand.

Answered payers (v 5-7)

Next, David recalls answered prayers and praises God for them. Many times, David had faced hopeless moments when he thought he had reached the end. Many times, He was overwhelmed by the fear of death. In those moments, he cried out to God and God listened to his cry from His holy temple. This psalm expresses what David had experienced time and time again. Let us also remember what the Lord has done for us and praise His name. This is not mere nostalgia but is the key to living with strength for the future. The God who has upheld you until now will surely continue to uphold you. “I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.” Amen.
