2 Samuel 5:10-12

10 David became greater and greater, for the Lord God of armies was with him.

11 Then Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David with cedar trees, carpenters, and stonemasons; and they built a house for David.

12 And David realized that the Lord had appointed him as king over Israel, and that He had exalted his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.

Kingship Established

Establishment of kingship

David became greater and greater. He became a great man (1) in wealth and power, (2) in fame and honor, (3) in the strength to conquer his enemies, (4) and in the expansion of his territory. The reason David’s kingship was established was because “the Lord God of armies was with him.” The Lord’s presence is the true strength of a Christian and the source of all blessing. David became a man of honor as a result of carrying out the will of the Lord God of armies. Are you walking the path that the Lord has prepared for you? Let us move forward, confirming that the Lord is with us each step of the way.

Construction of the royal palace

Jerusalem had now been established as the new capital. The next necessity was a royal palace worthy of that capital. At the time, the Israelites were primarily engaged in agriculture and livestock and were not accustomed to constructing buildings using processed wood or stone. Just then, a wonderful message reached David, who was in need of expert assistance. (1) Hiram, the king of Tyre (modern-day Lebanon), offered his support to David. He sent cedar wood, carpenters, and stonemasons. The region was known for producing high-quality cedar, and Tyre had many skilled craftsmen. Cedar was considered the finest building material of that time. (2) What King Hiram of Tyre was doing was forming a covenant of friendship with David. He recognized David’s greatness and judged that it was wiser to become his ally rather than his enemy. (3) Hiram was a Gentile, and yet he built a royal palace for David. This act serves as a foreshadowing of how, in the New Testament time, Gentile believers would enter into covenant with Jesus, the Son of David. Let us also, just as Hiram did for David, offer our highest devotion to Jesus, the Son of David. The reason the Lord established David as king was to bless His people of Israel. Every blessing from the Lord comes with a mission. Have you received blessings? Let’s remember that those blessings come with a calling. Let’s seek the Lord’s strength so that we may fulfill the mission entrusted to us.
