And when the governor had nodded for him to speak, Paul responded: “Knowing that for many years you have been a judge to this nation, I cheerfully make my defense,
since you can take note of the fact that no more than twelve days ago I went up to Jerusalem to worship.
And neither in the temple did they find me carrying on a discussion with anyone or causing a riot, nor in the synagogues, nor in the city itself.
Nor can they prove to you the things of which they now accuse me.
But I confess this to you, that in accordance with the Way, which they call a sect, I do serve the God of our fathers, believing everything that is in accordance with the Law and is written in the Prophets;
having a hope in God, which these men cherish themselves, that there shall certainly be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked.
In view of this I also do my best to maintain a blameless conscience both before God and before other people, always.
Now after several years I came to bring charitable gifts to my nation and to present offerings,
in which they found me occupied in the temple, having been purified, without any crowd or uproar. But there were some Jews from Asia—
who ought to have been present before you and to have been bringing charges, if they should have anything against me.
Or else have these men themselves declare what violation they discovered when I stood before the Council,
other than in regard to this one declaration which I shouted while standing among them, ‘For the resurrection of the dead I am on trial before you today!’ ”
Paul stated that since Felix had served as the governor of Judea for more than five years, he should be able to make a sound judgment regarding the matters concerning the Jews. “Since you can take note of the fact that no more than twelve days ago I went up to Jerusalem to worship.” This was his rebuttal to the first accusation (stirring up dissension among the Jews throughout the world): (1) Only twelve days had passed since he had gone up to Jerusalem. (2) He had not engaged in disputes with anyone or incited the crowd. (3) His accusers could not provide any evidence to support their claims. “But I confess this to you, that in accordance with the Way, which they call a sect, I do serve the God of our fathers…” (1) Rebuttal to the second accusation (being a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes): (a) What he believed was not a heresy but “the Way.” (b) His faith was rooted in the Old Testament Scriptures. (c) He held on to the hope of the resurrection. (d) Therefore, he made every effort to maintain a clear conscience. (2) The high priest Ananias was a Sadducee, so he did not believe in the resurrection. Paul’s charges were based on religious reasons. “Now after several years I came to bring charitable gifts to my nation and to present offerings…” (1) Rebuttal to the third accusation (trying to desecrate the temple): (a) He went up to Jerusalem to give alms to his fellow Jews and present offerings. (b) He did not bring any Gentiles into the temple. (c) Only some Jews from Asia were with him. (2) Those who initially seized Paul in the temple were not present. (a) They themselves should have brought their accusations before the governor. (b) Their absence indicated that there was no valid reason to accuse Paul. (3) Those who are now accusing Paul should prove his wrongdoing. (a) They were present during the trial before the Sanhedrin. (b) Paul only cried out, “For the resurrection of the dead I am on trial before you today.” While defending himself, Paul was also proclaiming the gospel. (4) Felix was placed in a delicate position. (a) He had to intervene in a theological dispute among the Jews. (b) However, he did not want to offend the Jewish leaders. Woe to those who know the right path but do not follow it. Felix was exactly such a person. As for us, let us fear God and make the right choices.
