Acts 23:16-21

16 But the son of Paul’s sister heard about their ambush, and he came and entered the barracks and told Paul.

17 Paul called one of the centurions to himself and said, “Take this young man to the commander, for he has something to report to him.”

18 So he took him and led him to the commander and *said, “Paul the prisoner called me over to him and asked me to bring this young man to you because he has something to tell you.”

19 The commander took him by the hand, and stepping aside, began to inquire of him privately, “What is it that you have to report to me?”

20 And he said, “The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down tomorrow to the Council, as though they were going to inquire somewhat more thoroughly about him.

21 So do not listen to them, for more than forty of them are in hiding to ambush him, and these men have put themselves under an oath not to eat or drink until they kill him; and now they are ready and waiting for assurance from you.”

Conspiracy Uncovered

The son of Paul’s sister (v 16-21)

“But the son of Paul’s sister heard about their ambush, and he came and entered the barracks and told Paul. Paul called one of the centurions to himself and said, ‘Take this young man to the commander, for he has something to report to him.’” This is the only instance in the entire New Testament where Paul’s family (relatives) is mentioned. (1) The son of Paul’s sister (Paul’s nephew) learned about the plot against Paul. While it is unclear how he found out, there are several possible explanations: (a) If he was a member of the Zealots, he could have had access to information about the conspiracy. (b) He may have overheard the conspirators discussing their plan by chance. (c) He could have obtained the information through the family’s political connections. (2) He informed Paul about the Jews’ ambush plan. Since Paul was a Roman citizen, he was treated with respect. As a result, he was able to receive visits from family, relatives, and friends at the Antonia Fortress. Additionally, he had the ability to request assistance from a centurion. “So he took him and led him to the commander and said, ‘Paul the prisoner called me over to him and asked me to bring this young man to you because he has something to tell you.’ …” (1) The centurion took Paul’s nephew to the commander. (2) The commander brought Paul’s nephew to a private place and listened to him. He was making an effort to treat Paul with kindness. (3) How old was this nephew? (a) The term “young man” is the Greek word “neanias.” (b) It usually refers to men in their 20s or 30s, though it can also describe younger individuals. (c) Since the commander took him by the hand, it suggests that Paul’s nephew was still a child. “And he said, ‘The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down tomorrow to the Council, as though they were going to inquire somewhat more thoroughly about him. So do not listen to them, for more than forty of them are in hiding to ambush him…’” The boy detailed the Jewish conspiracy to the commander and pleaded with him not to grant their request. There are times when God uses children to fulfill His plans. The spiritual eyes that perceive God’s providential hand serve as a compass guiding our life of faith.
