Paul’s principle of ministry: To the Jews first, and also to the Gentiles

At the beginning of his first missionary journey, the principle that Paul adopted for his ministry became clear: “to the Jew first, and also to the Gentiles.” There are three reasons behind this principle. (1) Practical Reason: Synagogues were dispersed throughout the Roman Empire and served as infrastructure for ministry (in large towns, there were multiple synagogues). By going there, he could speak to the Jews. Furthermore, he could also address Gentiles who were interested in Judaism. (2) Theological Reason: Acts 13:46 states, “Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, ‘It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first. Since you repudiate it and consider yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.’” Paul and Barnabas clearly declared that the gospel must first be preached to the Jews. Romans 1:16 says, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” (a) God first called the Jews. (b) God made the covenants first with the Jews. (c) God first saved the Jews and then established the church. (3) Sentimental Reason: Romans 9:1-5 states, “I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying; my conscience testifies with me in the Holy Spirit, that I have great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed, separated from Christ for the sake of my countrymen, my kinsmen according to the flesh…” Romans 10:1 states, “Brothers and sisters, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation.” Paul had the conviction that the salvation of the Gentiles would bring about the salvation of the Jews, and the salvation of the Jews would lead to the Messiah’s return (Rom. 11:11-14). Peter also held the same conviction (Acts 3:19-20). The teachings of the Lord Jesus align with this as well (Matt. 23:39). The greatest harm to Christianity has been caused by the doctrine of Replacement Theology (the teaching that Israel is cursed and the Church has become the new Israel). Let us remember to pray for the salvation of Israel.

Today's prayer

Heavenly Father, salvation began with the Jews and was delivered to the Gentiles through them. In this present time, may many more Jews come to salvation. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
