Cornelius’ Vision (4)

Cornelius’ response

“When the angel who spoke to him left, he summoned two of his servants and a devout soldier from his personal attendants, and after he had explained everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.” (1) Let’s focus on Cornelius’ obedience. The lazy and those who procrastinate miss the opportunity to be used by God. As soon as the angel departed, Cornelius promptly sent three messengers to Joppa. (a) He dispatched two trustworthy servants. (b) Additionally, he sent a devout soldier (also a God-fearing Gentile) to accompany them. This soldier served as the escort for the two servants. (2) Cornelius explained everything to the messengers before sending them to Joppa. (a) By sharing all the information, Cornelius gave them the judgment and motivation they needed. (b) Cornelius was an excellent leader. A good superior does not merely manage subordinates but draws out their abilities and motivation, delegating authority to them.

Lesson for us

One of the frequently asked questions is “What happens to people who die without hearing the gospel?” Let’s explore the answer through Cornelius’ faith. (1) Romans 1:19-20 states, “because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, being understood by what has been made, so that they are without excuse.” (2) Furthermore, John 1:9 says, “This was the true Light that, coming into the world, enlightens every person.” (3) In Cornelius’ case, he had not yet received the light of the gospel (ref. John 1:9). However, he responded to the light given to him (general revelation through nature, as referenced in Romans 1:19). For those who respond to the light they have received and seek God, He provides the light of the gospel. This is what is happening here. (4) God is a God of love and justice. Concerning those who have passed away, we should leave them in God’s hands. What we, the living, must do is turn our eyes to the true God and walk with Him.

Today's prayer
