1 Samuel 11:12-15

12 Then the people said to Samuel, “Who is he that said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Bring the men, so that we may put them to death!”

13 But Saul said, “Not a single person shall be put to death this day, for today the Lord has brought about victory in Israel.”

14 Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, and let us go to Gilgal and renew the kingdom there.”

15 So all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king before the Lord in Gilgal. There they also offered sacrifices of peace offerings before the Lord; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

Reaffirmation of Saul’s Kingship

Saul’s generosity

Leaders who stand above others are required to have wisdom and generosity. Through today’s passage, let’s look at how Saul showed such quality as a leader. (1) The people who won the battle, losing themselves in excitement, proposed to execute those who had previously not agreed to Saul’s election as king. This refers to what happened in 10:27, where it is written, “But certain useless men said, ‘How can this one save us?’ And they despised him and did not bring him a gift. But he kept silent about it.” (2) However, Saul glorified God and rejected their proposal. This was a generous act by the wisdom of God. It is much better to win over repentant adversaries, than to kill them off. Revenge brings no benefit.

Reaffirmation of the kingship

Saul had already been confirmed as king at Mizpah (ref. 10:24). In today’s passage, Saul’s kingship is reaffirmed at Gilgal. (1) Gilgal is the memorial site where the people of Israel, having entered the promised land, resumed the ritual of circumcision. (2) The people offered peace offerings before the Lord and ate the “covenant meal,” rejoicing that Saul had become king. The joy of this day was brought about by Saul‘s earnest decisions. He was able to calm his naturally short temper and show a generous heart. Also, he did not claim the victory for himself, but rather said, “The Lord has brought about victory in Israel,” glorifying the Lord. Saul’s journey as a king began very well. However, problems begin to rise when the initial intentions are forgotten. Are you continuing your walk, remembering your initial spirit? Or is God calling you to “return to your first love”?

Today's prayer

Heavenly Father, there are many people in the Bible, who fail in their later years. Please help me have a generous heart and a humble spirit, and allow me to always walk with the Lord Jesus. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
