Mark 14:3-9

3 While He was in Bethany at the home of Simon the Leper, He was reclining at the table, and a woman came with an alabaster vial of very expensive perfume of pure nard. She broke the vial and poured the perfume over His head.

4 But there were some indignantly remarking to one another, “Why has this perfume been wasted?

5 For this perfume could have been sold for over three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor.” And they were scolding her.

6 But Jesus said, “Leave her alone! Why are you bothering her? She has done a good deed for Me.

7 For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good to them; but you do not always have Me.

8 She has done what she could; she has anointed My body beforehand for the burial.

9 Truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached in the entire world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.”

Anointing in Bethany

Devotion of one woman

During his visit to Jerusalem, Jesus used the house of Martha and Mary in the village of Bethany as his base of operations. As previously noted, the Lamb of God (Jesus) could only be sacrificed during the Feast of Passover. At this point, as the Passover approached, Jesus had already determined to lay down his life for the sinners. While staying in Bethany, the following event took place: (1) It is written that it was the “home of Simon the Leper.” Simon is believed to be the father of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. (2) A woman comes and pours expensive Nard perfume (pure nard) on Jesus’ head. According to the Gospel of John chapter 12, this woman is identified as Mary. (3) Mary’s actions symbolize an act of devotion (consecration). She poured a highly expensive Nard perfume on Jesus’ head. Such expensive ointment was typically prepared for wedding nights. (4) Mary did this knowing that Jesus would die of the cross. Mary’s spiritual depth and insight were the result of sitting at Jesus’ feet and listening to his teachings (Luke 10). Those who continue to commit themselves to hearing God’s word through daily devotions will eventually develop spiritual insight similar to Mary’s.

The response of the disciples

Having witnessed this, the disciples began to criticize the woman. (1) “Why has this perfume been wasted?” (2) “This perfume could have been sold for over three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor.” It is also mentioned in the Gospel of John chapter 12, that the perfume was about 300 grams and could have been sold for 300 denarii. In terms of the currency value at that time, 300 denarii equate to the earnings of a laborer for about 300 days. Jesus accepts and defends the woman’s act saying that: (1) This is a special time leading to the cross. (2) Her act is in preparation for Jesus’ burial. (3) Her act will be spoken of, proclaimed, and remembered wherever the gospel is preached. What will you learn from Mary’s act of devotion? Let’s reflect on what Jesus may desire from you.

Today's prayer

Father God of Jesus Christ, please give me a heart of dedication like Mary’s, rather than a judgmental one. May I be able to serve You today. I pray in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
