Mark 2:1-5

1 When Jesus came back to Capernaum a few days later, it was heard that He was at home.

2 And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer space, not even near the door; and He was speaking the word to them.

3 And some people *came, bringing to Him a man who was paralyzed, carried by four men.

4 And when they were unable to get to Him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above Him; and after digging an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralyzed man was lying.

5 And Jesus, seeing their faith, *said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

The Healing of a Paralyzed Man (1)

Four friends

Jesus returned to Capernaum. While he was speaking the word to the people at Peter’s house, a paralyzed man was brought to Him, being carried by four men. These four men were likely friends or family. They had faith. They believed that Jesus could heal this sick man. They also were unwilling to give up. Seeing that the doorway was crowded with people, they climbed onto the rooftop, made an opening by removing the roof, and lowered the paralyzed man on a pallet down into the crowd in front of Jesus. In the Middle Eastern homes of that time, had rooftops that could be easily accessed. Let’s observe their faith and eagerness. Even today, there is power in intercessory prayer through faith. Let’s earnestly offer our intercessory prayer for our family and friends who have not yet become Christians.

Jesus’ word

Let’s look at how Jesus responded to this situation. (1) First, Jesus observed their faith. “They” refers to the four friends and the paralyzed man. (2) Then, Jesus addressed the sick man, saying, “Son.” Jesus approached him with compassion. (3) Furthermore, Jesus declared, “Your sins are forgiven.” They came to Jesus seeking healing from the illness. However, Jesus addressed their ultimate need. In other words, Jesus understood that the root cause of the sickness was a matter of sin and that the joy that comes from the forgiveness of sin leads to healing of the body. We, too, may experience answers to our prayers that are different from what we expected. Though, it might be dissatisfying at the moment, when we reflect upon it, we will come to realize that it was the best answer. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He sees our faith and calls us “son,” and answers to our ultimate needs. If you have misunderstood Jesus Christ, let’s confess that sin now and put your trust in the living Christ.

Today's prayer

Father God of Jesus Christ, please strengthen my faith and teach me patience through faith. May I continue to trust in You. I pray in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
