Mark 1:29-34

29 And immediately after they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.

30 Now Simon’s mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever; and they immediately *spoke to Jesus about her.

31 And He came to her and raised her up, taking her by the hand, and the fever left her, and she served them.

32 Now when evening came, after the sun had set, they began bringing to Him all who were ill and those who were demon-possessed.

33 And the whole city had gathered at the door.

34 And He healed many who were ill with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.

Healing of Simon’s Mother-in-Law and Others

Simon’s mother-in-law

After leaving the synagogue, Jesus went to the house of Simon and Andrew. When He arrived, He was told that Simon’s mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever. (1) So, Jesus approached her. (2) He took her by the hand and raised her up. Then the fever left her at once. (3) Above all, notice that this healing took place on the Sabbath. This was unacceptable according to the common understanding of the rabbis at that time. What happened as a result of the healing? She began to serve Jesus and His followers. This signifies that she was completely healed and shows how thankful she was for this healing. At the same time, we must take note of the personal impact this had on Simon. At that moment, he experientially realized that Jesus of Nazareth was someone who answers to his personal needs. Have you experienced God as the one who interacts with you personally? If not, let’s pray and seek to know that God is alive and interacts with us on a personal level.

After sunset

After the sun had set, all those who were sick or demon-possessed were brought to Jesus. The phrase, “after the sun had set” means “when the Sabbath ended.” Something of great impact occurred in the city. According to Luke 4:40, Jesus laid hands on each one and healed them individually. Here too, the compassion of Jesus is clearly evident. He cast out many demons, but he did not allow the demons to speak because they knew who He was. Jesus did not seek to demonstrate his Messiahship through miraculous signs. Both healing the sick and casting out demons stemmed from his compassionate heart. Today, God’s love continues to pour out on the weak, the bound, and the afflicted. Let us joyfully receive the love of God extended to us. Also, let’s carry the heart of Jesus as our own and go out into this world today.

Today's prayer

Father God, please use me as your hands and feet. Let me walk today with the heart of Jesus as my own. I pray in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
