18 When Delilah saw that he had told her all that was in his heart, she sent word and called the governors of the Philistines, saying, “Come up once more, for he has told me all that is in his heart.” Then the governors of the Philistines came up to her and brought up the money in their hands.
19 And she made him sleep on her knees, and called for a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then she began to humble him, and his strength left him.
20 She said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!” And he awoke from his sleep and said, “I will go out as at other times and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had departed from him.
21 Then the Philistines seized him and gouged out his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza and restrained him with bronze chains, and he became a grinder in the prison.
22 However, the hair of his head began to grow again after it was shaved off.
The secret of Samson’s strength laid in his being a Nazirite. If he were to cease being a Nazirite, the supernatural power given to him by God would be taken away. The tragedy of Samson was that his strength was taken away. Moreover, a greater tragedy was that he himself was unaware of this fact. We Christians may also experience something similar to Samson. If we resist God, the Holy Spirit can be taken away from us. But the greatest tragedy is not realizing that the Holy Spirit has been removed from us. (1) Delilah revealed all of Samson’s secrets to the Philistine lords and received the promised silver. While Samson was asleep, his seven locks of hair were shaved off. When he woke up, he thought he could defeat the Philistines again, just like before. However, the power from God had already departed from him and he was unaware of this fact.
Samson’s eyes were gouged out, and he was taken to Gaza. Gaza was a Philistine city farthest from the territory of Israel and where Samson had previously carried away its gates. There he was bound with bronze chains and put to work grinding at the mill in the prison, a task usually done by women. Samson, who had great strength, was now bound with bronze chains and forced into women’s labor. This was the greatest humiliation for Samson. However, during his captivity, Samson’s hair began to grow back again. (1) This period became a time of reflection on his actions. (2) This period became a time for him to regain his status as a Nazirite. Here lies a lesson for us. The only way to regain the blessings of the Holy Spirit is through repentance of sin and returning to God. Through this process, we can restore our Nazirite status. Let’s remember the depth of God’s grace, confess our sins, and turn back to the heavenly Father. Let’s receive the filling of the Holy Spirit through faith.
